Investigation on the Electrohydrodynamic Forces in a Lab-on-a-Chip

D.Donato and A.Leonardi and M.Rudan

Abstract:

A model for describing parasitic phenomena in Lab-on-a-Chip, based on AC dielectrophoresis, is proposed. Parasitic phenomena are generated by gradients in conduc- tivity and permittivity that, coupled with high-strength AC electric fields, give rise to electrothermal forces, while gradients in mass density give rise to buoyancy forces. The resulting electrothermal forces cause a fluid flow motion that is calculated by analytical approximations that compare favorably with numerical solutions.
